Teen drivers remain one of the highest-risk age groups for fatal auto accidents, and auto collisions are one of the leading causes of death for all Americans under 35. In light of these statistics, it’s natural to be a little anxious when teenagers get behind the wheel. You can’t drive for them, but you can help them avoid auto accidents with these safety tips from Michael J’s Body Shop:

Teenage Driving Lessons

Ditch the Distractions

Distracted driving and speeding are two of the biggest—and most preventable—risk factors in teen car collisions. A study from the American Automobile Association estimates that the presence of just one other passenger under the age of 21 increases the risk of a fatal auto accident by 44%.

Always Look for Trouble

Driving safely isn’t about knowing how to react in an emergency so much as it is about avoiding them entirely. Simply keeping both eyes on the road and both hands on the wheel aren’t always enough to, say, predict a blind turn or avoid hidden debris on the highway. Train your teen to develop situational awareness for different road hazards and to respond accordingly.

Know the Car

Older cars used to require a very different skill set, such as what to do when hydroplaning or how to avoid locking the brakes. However, newer cars incorporate various safety technologies such as traction control and antilock brakes, meaning that overcompensating can result in even bigger problems. These safety systems are no substitute for responsible driving, but it is important to know how the car will respond in emergency maneuvers.
