woman driving car in winter

San Jose enjoys mild winter weather relative to other American cities in the north. But that doesn’t mean San Jose drivers do not have to worry about slippery streets and near-freezing temperatures. To prepare your car for winter weather and ensure your safety behind the wheel, stop by your local car repair shop to have these winter service items performed.

Battery Test

Cold weather reduces battery life, which makes it much harder for the engine to start. Have the mechanic check and clean the battery, terminal, and cables to ensure that they are free of damage and corrosion. The battery should also be tested to see if it can hold a strong charge or if it needs to be replaced.

Brake Inspection

The braking system is essential for safe winter driving, so it should be inspected before winter. This is especially true if you are hearing strange noises during braking or if you notice that braking power has decreased.

Antifreeze Check

Coolant, also known as antifreeze, prevents your radiator from freezing and corroding. The radiator should be flushed, cleaned, and re-filled with antifreeze and water at least once every two years.

Heater and Defroster Examination

Anyone who has ever driven a car with a broken heater or defroster will readily tell you how distracting and unsafe it is. Have your heater and defroster professionally inspected before winter to make sure it is functioning as it should.

Windshield Wiper Replacement

To prepare for San Jose’s rainy winters, invest in a good pair of windshield wipers. For optimal safety and visibility, replace the windshield wipers every 6-12 months and refill the windshield wiper fluid before winter.
