Important Steps to Take Immediately Following a Collision
Though not all car accidents are reported, some estimates claim that at least 6 million occur every year. Considering this shocking statistic, there’s a good chance you will be involved in an accident at some point in your lifetime. In case that time comes, it’s essential for you to be adequately prepared. Here are a few steps to take right after a collision:
Move Away from Danger
If your vehicle is still running after a collision, check your surroundings and pull to the side of the road. If your vehicle is terribly damaged and cannot move, set up flares or reflective triangles around your vehicle and that of the other driver.
Check for Injuries
Once you and the other driver are out of harm’s way, check if any of the passengers in either car are injured. If anyone is unconscious or bleeding profusely, call for an ambulance. If everyone appears to be in good condition, proceed to the next step.
Call the Police
No matter how minor the accident seems, it’s still a good idea to call the police. If the collision is serious, the police may come to the scene, file an accident report, and provide whatever assistance they can. An accident report can help the insurance companies sort out who owes what in terms of compensation for damages.
Exchange Information
Take pictures of the incident and ask the other driver for his information. You and the other driver should exchange driver’s license numbers, contact information, and insurance information. Even if you think you are to blame for the accident, you must not admit fault.
