How to Judge a Safe Following Distance

Following too closely is a major contributor to rear-end collisions. By ensuring you’re maintaining a safe following distance, you can reduce your chances of needing collision repair. This video explains more.

In good driving conditions, you should allow 3 seconds of following time. To judge this, pick a fixed object and start counting when the rear bumper of the car in front of you passes it. If your front bumper reaches the object before you count 3 seconds, you could be too close.
