How to Check Your Tire Tread Wear

Bald Tire

Tire tread level has a profound effect on the vehicle’s handling, braking, and susceptibility to hydroplaning and even tire failure. It’s recommended that you check your vehicle’s tire tread wear every week, as well as before a long trip, to ensure your safety and optimal performance of your vehicle. To check tire tread wear at home, put a quarter, face down, into several grooves of your tires. The tire grooves should always cover at least part of Washington’s head. If they don’t, then your tires have less than 4/32 inches of tread depth. Although 2/32 inches is the legal minimum, experts recommend at least 4/32 inches to reduce the risk of hydroplaning on wet roads.
